R P Nodder Del. Sculp.t
Richard Polydore Nodder came from a family that drew the natural world for a living. His father, Frederick, illustrated the first scientific description of the platypus. Richard joined the family's work near the end of his father's life. On this sheet he signed for two jobs. Del., he drew it. Sculp.t, he engraved it.
Feathered, like two small combs. A butterfly's are thin, with a knob at the tip. These are how you know it's a moth.
Two dots of red, brushed on after the sheet came off the press.
Stout and furred, another mark of a moth. Up close, the fur is hundreds of short engraved strokes.
The black lines were printed from the copper plate. The yellow and brown were brushed on by hand, one sheet at a time. In places the paint and the printed line don't quite meet.
